Class Photo - Greycliffe
Mixed media, oil on canvas - 40.5 x 50.5cm
My mother was part of the silent generation. Born in the 1920s and growing up on a pioneering farm in Western Queensland. She glossed over the details and romantised it for us which is typical of this generation. Since her passing I've worked to fill in some details and located a class photo. Her smile remained with her into her 90s but the photo showed a scruffy group of children who looked unnourished and somewhat impoverished. This paining includes words that her older sister wrote about their experience and that my grandmother had cried for three days when she saw the shack they were to live in with hessian walls and dirt floor. I'm tracing the truth and giving a voice to this silent generation through my mother's image and stories.
