Fleeting
Acrylic on canvas
76 x 50 x 3.5 cm
At times we can see images within shapes and a new narrative evolves. This painting was inspired by one of Sean Quinn’s photographs, Textures Main Beach North Straddie. (Twodogs photography). Sean’s photos are stunning and inspire me to paint. I was taken by the shapes created in the sand as I could see a group of people, like spirits from the past. That combined with the lacelike effects of the foam on the water had me researching who the first lace makers were to reach Australia. At one stage anyone who was not an Indigenous Australian arrived by boat, each one bringing new skills and adding to the rich fabric or our society.

Some purists say you shouldn’t paint from a photograph. Easy to say when you haven’t been seduced by the photography of Sean Quinn - Twodogs Photography. The colours that he captures in our local environment inspired me to start painting landscapes and seascapes. Contrasting colours of the ocean and land highlight the bright white structure.

Fall
Acrylic on canvas
50.5 x 40.5 x 3.5cm
Rich, wet and mossy, what is it about rainforests that feeds the soul? This painting was inspired by one of Sean Quinn’s photographs, Secret Falls Tassie.(Twodogs photography). Sean’s photos are stunning and inspire me to paint. With the recent bushfires we need to take action to protect and preserve the environment even more than we have. Rainforests provide life and an energy that we experience on a cellular level.

Markers
Acrylic and charcoal on canvas
30.5 x 30.5 x 5cm
For some time I’ve been fascinated by flood markers beside the road. Mysterious rulers coming out of clumps of grass set against a blue sky. The numbers now seem irrelevant and reality of the situation incomprehensible. I realise my colour choices here have been a beacon of hope.

The intrigue of the northern New South Wales caldera is captivating. Travel south from the high rise on the Gold Coast and the rich volcanic red earth, rolling green hills and mountain ranges provide a different set of natural high rise. While Wollumbin dominates the landscape as you look west from the coastline, if you look more closely you begin to see that the warier chief is not alone. The colours change with the seasons and sunsets cast shadows of the past as a reminder the rich and ancient history of this land.

The sunset over the water can be overwhelming at times. Colours explode and bounce. This painting was inspired by one of Sean Quinn’s photographs, South Beach Sunset (Twodogs photography). Sean’s photos are stunning and inspire me to paint. The drama of the sunset is built using impasto and vibrant colour to create texture and movement. We are all drawn to the ocean and the positive ions refresh our souls. Add to that a blanket of sunset and we get lost in that moment willingly.
