Pond

Oil and cold wax on board

200 x 200mm

One of three imagined landscapes using a limited palette and mixing oil paint with cold wax. Paint was applied using a palette knife. This is a new medium for me but familiar in the layering approach to making an image. I did this series after I returned to Scotland. I’m sure that’s where the cool landscapes came from.

Debris

Oil, tissue and branches on canvas

100 x 100 x 3.5cm

This is a reworked canvas responding to the changing imagery of Tumbulgum and surrounding areas during the floods. Cattle swimming, red roofs reflecting in the river bend, rich red soil, rolling green hills and blue sky reflecting in the water mass.

Ignition

Acrylic on canvas

40 x 50 x 3.5cm

This painting was inspired by one of Sean Quinn’s photographs, Ignite. (Twodogs photography). The relatively untouched beach in South Beach has a shifting shoreline and no visible signs of settlement. The luminous green of the moss on the rocks was simply stunning set against the rising sun.

Fleeting

Acrylic on canvas

76 x 50 x 3.5 cm

At times we can see images within shapes and a new narrative evolves. This painting was inspired by one of Sean Quinn’s photographs, Textures Main Beach North Straddie. (Twodogs photography). Sean’s photos are stunning and inspire me to paint. I was taken by the shapes created in the sand as I could see a group of people, like spirits from the past. That combined with the lacelike effects of the foam on the water had me researching who the first lace makers were to reach Australia. At one stage anyone who was not an Indigenous Australian arrived by boat, each one bringing new skills and adding to the rich fabric or our society.

The Lighthouse

Acrylic on canvas

76 x 61 x 3.5 cm

Some purists say you shouldn’t paint from a photograph. Easy to say when you haven’t been seduced by the photography of Sean Quinn - Twodogs Photography. The colours that he captures in our local environment inspired me to start painting landscapes and seascapes. With Sean’s permission I have been relaxing into interpreting the beauty he captures. The Lighthouse is seen through the lease of a drone as Fingal Lighthouse dots the jagged coastline. Contrasting colours of the ocean and land highlight the bright white structure.

Bay of Fires

Oil on canvas

92 x 61 x 3.5 cm

This piece is a challenge I set myself based on Bay of Fires in Tasmania. Researching the history of that area brought up a complex dark past, Indigenous, convict, whaling....digging deeper beyond postcard images. I need to thank Jenny Newby for sharing her photography of the area for inspiration.

Fall

Acrylic on canvas

50.5 x 40.5 x 3.5cm

Rich, wet and mossy, what is it about rainforests that feeds the soul? This painting was inspired by one of Sean Quinn’s photographs, Secret Falls Tassie.(Twodogs photography). Sean’s photos are stunning and inspire me to paint. With the recent bushfires we need to take action to protect and preserve the environment even more than we have. Rainforests provide life and an energy that we experience on a cellular level.

Acrylic on canvas, refreshed frame

45 x 55 x 1.5cm

For some time now I’ve been watching the willy wagtails in our garden. We have two regular visitors who are cheeky and make me laugh as they play with the dog. Working with a background of layering first then focusing on the space between objects, allowing the birds and plants to emerge.

Wilderness II

Acrylic on board, refreshed frame

68.5 x 58 x 1.5cm framed

There’s a series of imagined Jenny flowers that keep growing in my work. They are the shapes I feel comfortable with and the overlay resembles my overgrown garden. I like both. In this painting I used a softer restricted palette which I set as a challenge for myself to shirt what has been a ritual for me.

Markers

Acrylic and charcoal on canvas

30.5 x 30.5 x 5cm

For some time I’ve been fascinated by flood markers beside the road. Mysterious rulers coming out of clumps of grass set against a blue sky. The numbers now seem irrelevant and reality of the situation incomprehensible. I realise my colour choices here have been a beacon of hope.

Cloud Catchers

Oil on canvas

102 x 76 x 3cm

The intrigue of the northern New South Wales caldera is captivating. Travel south from the high rise on the Gold Coast and the rich volcanic red earth, rolling green hills and mountain ranges provide a different set of natural high rise. While Wollumbin dominates the landscape as you look west from the coastline, if you look more closely you begin to see that the warier chief is not alone. The colours change with the seasons and sunsets cast shadows of the past as a reminder the rich and ancient history of this land.

The sunset over the water can be overwhelming at times. Colours explode and bounce. This painting was inspired by one of Sean Quinn’s photographs, South Beach Sunset (Twodogs photography). Sean’s photos are stunning and inspire me to paint. The drama of the sunset is built using impasto and vibrant colour to create texture and movement. We are all drawn to the ocean and the positive ions refresh our souls. Add to that a blanket of sunset and we get lost in that moment willingly.
